Vic Chesnutt died on Christmas Day. The same day that respresents the birth of history's most famous martyr. Vic is a martyr now is his right. A man who was plagued for most of his adult life with stockpiled medical bills that he couldn't pay, dies during the same week that America passes a health care bill. Many opponents of public health care have said that no one in America dies because

8 Crazy Hanukkah Songs!
Posted on 16:30 by Unknown
Considering the greatest songwriters, TV writers, and screenwriters are all Jewish (okay not all of them...but a lot) one would think we would have a few festive songs for Hanukkah. But in the past century we've only been able to muster up a good half dozen. In fact, the humorous songs about Hanukkah are not only more common...they're actually much better.Happy Hanukkah, Hebroes and Hesistas!

I've noticed that my excitement for new releases is much lower than it used to be. When a new Pearl Jam album came out...I lined up at midnight at Tower Records just to be the first to buy it. I still go buy albums the day they come out...but it's usually a Tuesday ritual rather than a special treat. But this year...there were a few albums that got my juices going. As each step of this list is being unveiled, I have to say...there was a lot of music this year I really enjoyed. Whether it was scrounging to find the unreleased Beck cover album...or the return of Franz Ferdninand...or the underrated ben gibbard/farrar duet, there was a bunch of music out there to get excited about. Two newcomers to watch...Cut Off Your Hands and Cage The Elephant...I have a

The Unknown: The Bravery - Cowards
Posted on 23:25 by Unknown
I may be the only person who prefers the original version of The Bravery's Sun and the Moon to the new re-produced ultra uber spectacular polished tight-fitting version. To me the first version sounded more natural...more like the band's first album. The new "glitter" version sounds like the dorky guy in math class who keeps offering to do the prom queen's homework. You want to say "Stop it!..

When an American icon comes along with a new album...narrowing his career down to eleven songs isn't just a difficult task...it's an insult. Petty belongs with the greats. He has stood for artists' rights...he has stood against

The Unknown: Weezer - The Grey Album
Posted on 08:33 by Unknown
As most of you discovered...the Purple album is ficitional. It's just a collection of B-sides. But what I've realized over the years is that when you have a bunch of B-sides from a particular band...you barely listen to them. This was especially true when CDs were the primary listening mode. Less so on itunes...but still...I always put on an album first. So, I discovered, when I put B-sides

I have a theory about friendships. There are two types of friends in our lives: priority friends and obligation friends. Priority friends are the friends you want to hang out with. Obligation friends are the friends you feel obligated to hang out with. (Technically, there's a third category..."new friends"...but this category goes away after the 10th time hanging out with someone)For example

The Unknown: Weezer - The Purple Album
Posted on 22:25 by Unknown
I have always been obsessed with bonus tracks...b-sides...and the rare compilation inclusions. Finding these songs was like finding a secret piece of a band that most people didn't know about. It created a personal attachment to a band...even if they were popular. Owning "Even in His Youth" made you cooler than everyone who owned "Nevermind." Owning "Burro" gave you street cred over those who

The 11 Best Krist Novoselic Songs (post-Nirvana)
Posted on 04:00 by Unknown
Okay Nirvana week wouldn't be Nirvana week if all three members (sorry Chad) didn't get some of the spotlight. And we're forgetting one of the most important members, bassist Krist Novoselic. Krist has had no where near the success that Dave has had in his post-Nirvana career...but that doesn't negate his importance while in the band. Come As You Are would not be the hit it was if Krist

Solo careers are always measured against an artist's original band. The Dead Weather isn't a sonic dirgy blues explosion...it's a bluesier version of the White Stripes. And Lou Barlow's new album (Goodnight Unknown) isn't a singer-songwriter

It's tough to accept a new Alice in Chains album is in stores. And it's not really because it's hard to accept that Layne has been replaced...what is hardest to accept is that it's finally official that he's really gone. He will be missed...but that's no reason for the band not to go on. Jerry Cantrell wrote most of the music...and sang on a lot of the songs...so there's not a very radical

Two of the hottest bands this late summer are the goth-folk experience known as the xx...and the world-influenced bubble pop of JJ. With the Beatles Rock Band and Pearl Jam's exclusive deal at Target...the term "sell-out" is getting thrown around way too much. "Sell-out" should really be the term that describes a band who was on the outside looking in that sold their principles to get a good seat on the bus. I'm not saying that the music industry can't do anything right...they're just more skilled at doing things wrong. See, Q's album is not actually a new album...it's an old album that's been sitting around since 2001. Why? Because it's a concept jazz-infused hip-hop album without a break-out single which

Some bands can't do it. They need songwriters, producers, mastering, and guest vocalists to make their albums worthy. Put these bands on a stage with only their instruments and their voices to carry them...and most flop harder than fat guy on a high dive. That's what amazes me most about the Black Crowes. Here's a band that just writes good music. Kind like what bands used to do back in the
